Preparing Your Flagstaff Home for Spring: HVAC Maintenance Checklist

March in Flagstaff is unpredictable. One day it's 55°F and sunny, the next you're waking up to 6 inches of fresh snow. That's exactly why spring HVAC maintenance matters here more than almost anywhere else in Arizona.

Your heating system has been running hard since October — that's five solid months of daily use at 7,000 feet elevation, where furnaces work harder due to lower oxygen density. Before you switch to cooling mode, take 30 minutes to run through this checklist.

1. Replace Your Air Filter — This is the single most impactful thing you can do. A clogged filter forces your system to work harder, wastes energy, and shortens equipment life. In Flagstaff's dusty spring conditions (hello, wind season), check it monthly.

2. Clear Debris Around Your Outdoor Unit — Winter storms drop branches, pine needles, and debris around condensing units. Clear at least 2 feet of space on all sides. This is especially important in wooded areas like Kachina Village and Mountainaire.

3. Test Your AC Before You Need It — Don't wait until the first 80°F day in June. Run your cooling system now for 15 minutes. Listen for unusual sounds. Check that cool air is actually coming from the vents. Finding problems now means you're not scrambling when it's hot.

4. Inspect Your Ductwork — Visible duct connections in your attic or crawl space can loosen over winter. Look for obvious gaps, disconnected sections, or damaged insulation. Leaky ducts waste 20-30% of your heating and cooling energy.

5. Check Your Thermostat — If you're still using an old mercury thermostat, it's costing you money. A programmable or smart thermostat pays for itself within one heating season at Flagstaff's energy rates.

6. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up — A qualified technician can check refrigerant levels, test electrical connections, clean coils, and catch small problems before they become expensive repairs. Spring is the best time because HVAC companies aren't slammed yet.

When to Call a Professional: If you hear grinding, smell burning, see ice on your AC lines, or notice your system cycling on and off rapidly — don't wait. These are signs of problems that get worse (and more expensive) with time.
